The news business is still a profitable one. But that doesn’t mean the business is static. New innovations and fundraising campaigns are reshaping the way that news is accessed.
News for Kids is an online news site aimed at children. It offers daily roundups of current news written for children. Their stories cover worldwide and national news, and include explanations of unfamiliar terms. They also have a programme for young people in Africa.
In the past, news was only reported by broadcast TV. It was limited by the distance of the broadcaster and the news sources. A town crier would bellow the news while walking through the village.
However, with DVRs, viewers could timeshift and watch the news at their own pace. News networks started investing hundreds of millions of dollars in streaming operations.
For instance, NBC News Now boasts 31 million hours of content a month. This makes it the largest news operation in the U.S.
ABC has jumped into the streaming game, too. With a few exceptions, their coverage is largely nichified. Local stations have already begun repurposing their news content.
CNN, Fox, and MSNBC are all positioned to benefit from streaming. They hope that the audience will migrate to their services. And if that happens, they might just be able to create siloing results like cable did.
Streaming also means that viewers can view news whenever and wherever they want. That could attract a new overtly political news operation.
