Streaming is a hot topic among news execs, a topic that’s gaining in popularity as new, free news streamers pique viewers’ curiosity and demand for cable-quality news. Streaming’s promise is a clear one: viewers can access live or on-demand programming anywhere, anytime. Streaming news isn’t just about catching up with the news of the day; it also offers the chance to customize the experience.

For decades, broadcast news has ruled the airwaves. However, the arrival of cable TV spawned a host of new alternatives. For instance, cable TV’s “breaking news” coverage one-upped broadcast’s coverage of local events. Cable TV was also more entertaining than broadcast’s, which frustrated viewers.

In the late 1990s, CBS attempted to acquire Ted Turner’s Cable News Network. The company did not succeed, but it did set the stage for future streaming news networks.

The cable TV industry’s early experiments in streaming news spawned several high-profile competitors, including Fox and ABC. The networks invested hundreds of millions of dollars in streaming operations. The networks’ streaming operations were successful in attracting niche audiences. But the technology was also a flop, largely because they failed to understand the underlying technological implication.

For example, cable’s four-and-a-half-minute ad blocks featured Liberty Mutual insurance. The same block was also a four-and-a-half-minute long advertisement for Humira.

But streaming’s biggest draw was its ability to deliver news when and where viewers wanted it. Streaming’s greatest challenge was to avoid over-hyping the technology. This led news networks to invest hundreds of millions of dollars in streaming operations.
