Until the rise of 24-hour news networks, television and radio stations only interrupted non-news programs for breaking news events that could not wait until the next regular commercial break. These would include severe weather events such as tornadoes, floods and land-falling hurricanes, or an event of national significance such as the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, which required the entire country to interrupt regular programming for coverage. When an event requires interruption of regular programs, the network will alert all its affiliates to stand by and will usually provide a countdown sequence. Then, when the program is resumed, it will usually feature a newsflash or special report.
