Breaking news is a news story that warrants an interruption of regular non-news programming (or, in the case of a national network, their regularly scheduled newscast). The station’s affiliates will be alerted of the breaking news event through a countdown sequence, which allows them to switch to the network feed and begin airing it immediately. The report can also be inserted into the broadcast through a special ticker or a cut-in during normal program content, depending on the severity of the event.
