Breaking news, is a term used in the media to describe news that is occurring at the moment. This term often applies to stories happening in the present, such as the August 2017 North Korea crisis. This term is redundant nowadays, due to 24-hour news channels, which tend to fill their hours with commentary. Although “breaking news” can refer to all sorts of stories, the term is no longer used to describe all news. Breaking news, however, does have a different meaning today.

In current news, reports may last from minutes to several hours. Long-duration news events, however, can last for days, such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy. For these events, networks may integrate their own analysis, and analysts may be located in a studio, by phone or via satellite. Broadband is often used for sustained coverage, and regular commercial advertising may be suspended while the story unfolds. However, these are not the only sources of news.

In addition to the news from the past few days, CASE is also publishing award-winning publications, such as newsletters, blogs, and the magazine Currents. While everyone in the education sector talks about the need for communication and feedback, few in the advancement community practice active listening. Active listening is a crucial skill for advancement leaders. It can help them better understand the inner workings of their organizations and constituents. And it is essential for strengthening educational institutions.
