Streaming news is a new form of television news. It’s akin to a conventional TV show, but it arrives on demand, and travels wherever the viewer goes. The advantages of streaming news are numerous.
It’s inexpensive, and allows for timely delivery of news. It can be accessed at any time of day, and allows viewers to customize their experience. It’s also been shown to draw mass audiences. It’s been estimated that 85 percent of U.S. households subscribe to at least one streaming service.
When a breaking news story breaks, the network may pause its regular program to show a live shot of the anchor. It may also integrate analysis of the story.
Depending on the length of the news report, the network may be able to resume previous programming when the coverage is finished. It may also cut away to a video of the story or to another station’s local coverage. It may be difficult to re-air a program that lasts longer than 20 or 45 minutes, and commercial advertising may be suspended until the coverage is complete.
Streaming news has set off a cascade of innovations. News networks noticed the momentum in the streaming audience. They were able to use it to their advantage. They launched special reporting formats, which commonly included an internal alert service. They also repurposed programming from cable and produced documentaries and reruns.
