Streaming news has set a new standard for timely and ubiquitous news delivery. Whether you want to learn about the latest local news, the national story, or trending topics, streaming offers a customized experience.
The major news networks have invested hundreds of millions of dollars in their streaming operations. They are betting that their viewers will spend more time with them than with traditional TV. They are also expecting a siloing effect similar to that seen with cable. The result could be a profit of $3 billion by 2020.
For years, broadcasters and cable TV operators have been profitable. Historically, they have served an audience that has preferred entertainment over information. But this business is not without its challenges.
One of the most prominent issues is that consumers are frustrated with poor quality products and high prices. A recent study found that the average American spent more time watching streaming programming than TV. A number of companies have attempted to respond.
CBS, ABC, Fox, and NBC have invested in streaming operations. Each claims to offer a “streaming service.” They include documentaries, reruns, news analysis, and regular nightly news programs. In all, these networks will produce 31 million hours of content a month.
Online video streaming is likely to reshape political news coverage. It will not be bound by costly negotiations with cable companies. It will also be free from the limitations of limited television licenses.
Unlike cable, streaming news arrives on demand. It travels wherever the viewer is, which can be helpful in times of crisis.
