In broadcast media, Current News refers to a breaking news event that necessitates a brief interruption of the regular non-news programming (or, in some cases, of a regularly scheduled network newscast) to provide coverage of the developing story. A network will usually begin a countdown sequence on its feed, and will ask its affiliated stations to stand by for the break. Once the break is underway, a special graphic may appear on the screen, and lower thirds may be modified to indicate that the news is breaking. In some cases, a live news anchor will be present to provide immediate analysis of the unfolding situation. Breaking news is often referred to as “Newsflash” or “Special report” on network broadcasts, and may be accompanied by a distinct music cue.
