A new era of online video streaming is set to change the way news is covered. Streaming allows viewers to watch programming anywhere, anytime. Online video isn’t subject to the limited licenses that television networks have to pay for. This opens the door for new players to enter the game, and the multiplicity of choices may be a driving force in reshaping coverage.
Streaming news has already proven itself to be a big draw. For example, the Fox News Channel has a streaming app called Fox Nation, which has attracted 1.5 million subscribers. The app features live events and breaking news.
In addition to its own network, CBS News has an aggressive local streaming news strategy. It plans to beam 45,000 hours of local news in 2022.
Another example of local news from a streaming source is the local CBS affiliate in Pittsburgh, which piped coverage of the Pittsburgh bridge collapse to streamers.
CNN has also entered the news streaming business. Although its CNN+ channel didn’t attract much viewership, the network has invested hundreds of millions of dollars in streaming operations.
While cable TV is still the primary outlet for current news, the networks have high hopes for their streaming initiatives. They hope to capitalize on the technological advantage they have over broadcasters. These networks are repurposing content they’ve produced, such as documentaries and reruns, and scheduling regular nightly news programs.
Several other networks, including Al Jazeera, Newsmax, and Newsy, have also planted flags in the streaming frontier. As these networks build up their audiences, they’re aiming for niche audiences.
