The history of current news on cable or broadcast television is a long one. Broadcast news has been a profitable business. However, the advent of streaming has rewritten the script.

Streaming allows viewers to enjoy the latest news no matter where they are. The technology also makes building a news library economically feasible.

Traditionally, news on the air has been a linear, ad-based business. In recent years, the number of people who watch news on cable dropped from 76 percent in 2015 to 56 percent in 2021. As a result, newscasters have seen their audiences dwindle.

Streaming news has a lot of promise, though. It has been a decade since major streaming networks entered the fray. They’ve spent hundreds of millions of dollars on operations and have garnered an audience.

Despite this, there’s been some skepticism about streaming’s impact on the news industry. Critics have largely missed the fact that the news industry’s earliest movers were already aware of the technology and sunk a lot of money into experimenting.

For instance, CBS and Fox both operate multiple cable news channels. This includes a local CBS affiliate in Pittsburgh, which piped coverage of the bridge collapse in the city to streamers.

Streaming has also gotten the attention of major news networks. CNN, for example, has invested hundreds of millions of dollars in streaming.

Streaming is also a way for news networks to archive content. A study found that users spent more time watching streaming programs than conventional TV.
