When streaming was introduced, critics saw it as a potential competitor to traditional cable TV. But the technology had long-gestating cultural trends on its side.
Streaming allows viewers to watch news at their convenience. As a result, a mass audience has been attracted. In a market with low barriers to entry, new players have entered.
A major advantage of streaming is that it allows for real-time news delivery. This is important because of the way the news business is now conducted. News channels need to adjust to breaking news, which interrupts their broadcast schedule. They have to also avoid over-the-top reporting.
Streaming has also eliminated the need for the broadcast license. This makes it more affordable to build news libraries. It is also a good way to attract niche audiences.
Free news streamers have largely copied cable’s style. However, they are promoting cable-quality news. The free streamers would like to make a cut of the profits from their subscribers.
Online video will likely change the way political news is covered. Streaming will allow new overtly political operations to enter the fray. It will also remove the constraints of expensive negotiations with cable companies.
Aside from being more convenient, streaming has been found to be a viable business model. In fact, CBS News plans to beam 45,000 hours of local news in 2022.
Other major networks have entered the news streaming business. ABC, Fox, and Newsmax have each planted a flag in the streaming frontier.
