For decades, TV news has been on the airwaves. In addition to broadcasts, the most common source of information about current events is in-person conversations. But with streaming news, viewers have more choices.
When cable TV first came on the scene, many criticized CNN for not having enough viewers. But they failed to see the rapid rate at which the technology was adopted. And they overlooked the pent-up demand for alternatives.
The cable news business was a profitable venture. The cable channel operators competed against broadcasters for news and sports. They also one-upped broadcasters by delivering live events.
However, the cable channels were stuck in a linear time zone. Viewers had to wait until a news wheel turned. That meant watching their programmers’ clocks. As a result, they avoided news that challenged their beliefs.
Cable news networks responded by launching new streaming services. Some of them repurposed programming from broadcast and cable. Others built entire new networks. One of them, CNN, spawned MSNBC and a Fox News Channel.
Another major player, ABC, entered the streamer business. The network’s four-and-a-half-minute ad blocks featured products from Liberty Mutual insurance and Humira.
Fox Nation – Fox’s online video stream – has attracted 1.5 million subscribers. With online video streaming, the network will no longer be bound by costly negotiations with cable companies.
Streaming will also be a more cost-effective way to build a news library. Instead of paying a large sum to a broadcaster, viewers will be able to watch streaming news as often as they want.
