About Trending
Breaking news is a type of news story that warrants an interruption in non-news programs or, in the case of a national network newscast, to pause the program for live coverage. Breaking news stories are typically announced by a graphic and a distinctive music cue, or by a countdown sequence. Prior to the rise of 24-hour news channels, interruptive reporting was normally reserved for extremely urgent events such as the assassination of U.S. President John F. Kennedy in 1963 or severe weather events such as hurricanes and tornadoes, which triggered widespread, localized coverage that would have required numerous station affiliates to interrupt their regular programming with cut-ins or alert crawls.
