Streaming news has proven to attract both a mass and a niche audience. Unlike traditional broadcast and cable news, streaming is a technology that allows viewers to select the content they want. The news arrives on demand and travels where the viewer goes.
Before the advent of streaming, the only way to hear breaking news was to tune in. Cable and broadcast networks invested hundreds of millions of dollars in news operations to ensure that audiences would receive the news when they wanted it. But the cost of such services frustrated consumers.
Eventually, these frustrated consumers created kindling for new innovators. One such innovation was the invention of DVRs. DVRs could allow time-shifting, allowing people to watch the news when they were ready to watch.
In response, the major news networks jumped into the streaming business. They created a variety of news programs and documentaries. These offerings included a nightly news program, news analysis, reruns, and documentaries.
In addition to being more convenient than cable, news on streaming is available on virtually any device. Viewers can choose to block topics, express their opinions, and follow trending topics.
Another example of streaming’s advantages is the ability to archive programming. A streaming network can reuse its programming to meet demand. This makes building a library of news content more affordable and efficient.
Several of the streaming networks offer reruns. However, commercial-averse viewers may not pay for their subscriptions. Despite the lack of viewership, the networks are convinced that online video streaming will eventually attract viewers to their shows.
