Breaking news is a live report on a current, urgent issue that requires immediate coverage. Typically, it involves the interruption of non-news programming or a scheduled newscast to begin reporting on the event. Until the advent of 24-hour news networks, breaking news events were usually broadcast on local television and radio, often with cut-ins during regular programming or alert crawls on top of the station imaging. When an event warrants such an interruption, the network will often signal its affiliates to stand by and begin a countdown sequence for them to switch over to the network feed. Graphics, such as lower thirds or newsflash graphics, are also used to convey urgency.
