LIVE: White House holds press briefing | NBC News
One of the most significant changes to news coverage has been the arrival of online video streaming. This has created a multiplicity of new choices, and could further fuel polarization.
For decades, television news was broadcast and delivered over the airwaves. In addition, cable TV one-upped the broadcaster’s reporting by allowing viewers to watch live events. Streaming also enables viewers to access news when and where they want, while eliminating the need to watch on a specific timetable.
The convergence of long-gestating cultural trends has set the stage for streaming’s success. While it’s tempting to think that streaming is a nascent technology, news organizations have been investing hundreds of millions of dollars in its production and distribution for more than a decade. Streaming news has already proved popular among niche audiences, generating revenue and attracting new audience segments.
Despite their early skepticism, most major news networks have high hopes for the future of streaming. They’ve invested in programs to produce and distribute news and documentaries, as well as local and national programming. Currently, 85% of households subscribe to at least one streaming service.
Several new entrants have planted flags in the streaming frontier, including Newsy and Al Jazeera. Both are aiming to produce cable-quality news and are actively promoting their content.
Meanwhile, Fox News has attracted 1.5 million subscribers to its Fox Nation streaming app. Ultimately, these news operations are likely to compete for the same audience that drives the current news business.
