Streaming news is a new approach to reporting the latest news. It allows viewers to pick and choose their content, and it arrives on demand. This eliminates the scarcity and time lag that plagued broadcast news.
Despite some criticism of streaming, major news networks have a long-term plan for the medium. They have invested hundreds of millions of dollars in the technology. And they hope that online video will reshape the way we cover politics and news.
Until now, the kindling for new innovations in the news industry has been consumers. Consumers have become frustrated with low quality, high cost products. Commercial averse viewers may not pay for TV news, and they can be content to switch channels.
But with the proliferation of new choices, polarization could be fed. For example, a multiplicity of overtly political news operations will be able to attract audiences. That’s one reason why the three main streaming networks are chasing breaking news.
While streaming offers consumers the freedom to watch their preferred news program at any time, it also makes building a news library inexpensive. Newscasters fear that their audiences will vanish. Streaming executives have a few rules to follow when marketing their services. Among them is not over-hyping the medium.
One of the major streaming networks, Fox, has attracted 1.5 million subscribers to its Fox Nation app. These are paid subscribers who have agreed to sign up for a subscription for at least a year.
