Breaking news is a term used by television and radio stations when a story develops that warrants the interruption of current or regular programming to provide live coverage of an event. Prior to the era of 24-hour news networks, breaking news was limited to extremely urgent events such as major natural disasters or the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. Typically, the network would interrupt its regular programming and alert affiliates that they should interrupt their local broadcasts to switch over to the breaking news feed. The breaking news feed is usually accompanied by a distinctive music cue and a graphic that indicates the type of event being covered.
