When the first cable news network was launched in 1980, few could have envisioned how it would revolutionize the industry. The network, founded by Ted Turner, spawned a number of other cable channels.
But critics weren’t alone in pointing to cable’s shortcomings. At the same time, there was a pent-up demand for an alternative.
Streaming networks were chasing a breaking news cycle and repurposing programs from cable. These new free news streams looked like TV but strove to deliver quality content.
Streaming also offered viewers the ability to customize their news experiences. Instead of being limited to a set list of pre-determined programs, they could choose to follow a specific topic or a topic of interest. In fact, a recent study shows that a majority of Americans subscribe to at least one streaming service.
Streaming also allowed the news industry to cut out costly negotiations with cable companies. It also offered the audience the option of watching on the go. Rather than waiting to watch a news story, a viewer could watch on his or her laptop. This new option for consumers has created frustration for cable operators, who are forced to compete with competitors who offer the same content at lower prices.
Streaming news has carved out a niche for itself among niche audiences. For example, Fox Nation, a free streaming app operated by the Fox News Channel, has attracted 1.5 million subscribers.
Another notable example is NewsBreak, an app that offers local news. Users can read articles, express their opinions, and block topics they don’t want to see.
