About Current News
Trending is the term used to describe breaking news stories in television and radio. When an event occurs that warrants an interruption of non-news programming, a network will alert its affiliate stations and ask them to stand by. A countdown will then appear on-screen to give affiliated stations an opportunity to switch to the network feed and begin covering the story. This is also known as a Newsflash or Special Report (disambiguation). Before 24-hour news channels existed, such interruptions were rare and reserved for incredibly urgent events such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy or severe weather threats such as tornadoes.
