When it comes to reporting breaking news, you have to get it right. Often, media outlets are in a race to get the story first, but too many times, that can result in bad information.
Reporters are also prone to making assumptions, especially about things like eyewitness accounts. Whether it’s a shooting or a building fire, panicked bystanders aren’t always reliable. It’s best to ask the authorities for confirmation on these accounts. In fact, NPR based its report on an eyewitness account of Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords being shot and dying that turned out to be wrong.
Ultimately, the key to being successful at covering trending topics is being able to communicate your thoughts and ideas about the news you’re watching. Be sure to include a minimum 8-sentence summary and a minimum 16-sentence reflection or opinion in your report.
