Current News is a form of television programming that involves coverage of breaking news. It is used by most broadcast networks, although it is also common on some radio stations, and on the websites of news organizations such as The New York Times and The Washington Post.
When a story breaks on the network, it is usually introduced by a brief opening graphic with music (such as NBC’s “The Pulse of Events”) that emphasizes the importance of the event and a live shot of the anchor or cameraman welcoming viewers to the broadcast. This is followed by a breaking news anchor, who may introduce a reporter covering the story and possibly pass the coverage to a reporter at the scene of the breaking event.
Breaking news is usually interrupted by the network or station’s master control or other internal alert service, and an opening countdown to the interruption will be shown for affiliates to join in (usually at five seconds), before the feed switches again. Information is then disseminated to all affiliated stations and the breaking news is replayed during a national newscast (if one was in progress when the event occurred).
A local news station might also interrupt its evening newscast to cover a breaking story, and this will often be set up by a brief pause from the network’s talent before they resume their evening coverage. This is done to allow stations to provide a more localized take on the breaking news.
