Breaking news is a broadcast interruption that gives information about urgent events. Often, the story at hand will be a major news event that warrants a complete halt to regular non-news programming (or, in the case of network affiliates, regularly scheduled newscasts), and the associated news anchor may be prompted to use a special graphic open, which is usually accompanied by a distinctive music cue. Prior to the advent of 24-hour news networks, such breaks were rare and only used for news events of extreme importance, such as the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, which elicited nationwide coverage that required numerous stations to interrupt their regular programming.
