Current News is a television news program that features breaking news about recent events. Oftentimes, the story is a major one that affects the lives of many people.
Trending
Breaking news on network television is interrupted in the middle of an existing program (or in the case of local stations, at the beginning or end of a newscast). When an interruption occurs, a reverse countdown begins to allow affiliates to switch over to the network feed and then, once all affiliated stations have joined the feed, a news anchor introduces the news story.
A breaking news report or special report on television typically lasts a few minutes. However, it may continue for an extended period of time (the longest reported news reports during a single incident occurred for days at a time).
On radio, breaking news has its own specific format. It is designed to arouse the attention of the listener and convey a sense of urgency, so it can sound like an alarm. The opening is usually a graphic accompanied by music.
It ends with a disclaimer that viewers can learn more about the story at the network’s website or on a sister station or digital subchannel. It also provides a link to the local newscast or overnight news program where a full wrap-up of the story may be found.
The term “breaking news” is often used interchangeably with the phrase “special report,” which has become more common in the United States than it once was, but is still reserved for stories that are extremely important or that have been extensively covered. For example, the term “breaking news” was used when a story involving the death of a president or major political figure first broke, while a similar event might be described as “special report” by other media.
