Unlike traditional news programs, current events can last from a few minutes to several hours. Some news events last for days, such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy in 1963 and the September 11 attacks in 2001. Broadcast networks may also incorporate their own analysis of the story, whether they are broadcasting it from a studio or via phone. Broadband may also be used for sustained coverage. Regular commercial advertising may be paused during these events.
Occasionally, local stations are granted an opportunity to break from the network feed to start evening newscasts. In such cases, local stations receive a cue from network talent and pause for a few seconds, then restart their coverage. Sometimes, an opening graphic will roll again as a reminder of a local news update. Afterward, the station master control or internal alert service will disseminate the information to the audience. Once the newscasters have completed their work, local stations will likely re-join the network feed or join it on an “extended edition”.
