Current News is a term used in broadcast television and radio to refer to the latest breaking news, often reported as “breaking” or “special report”. This is done primarily to convey a sense of urgency and interest.
Generally, a breaking news event is pre-empted from a network’s non-news programming (or, in some cases, regular scheduled newscasts). The newscaster introducing the story will announce that they have just learned that something important is happening, and that this event warrants a break.
The break usually begins with a brief opening graphic (usually with music, such as NBC’s “The Pulse of Events”) and voiceover from a news anchor that welcomes viewers to the program and introduces the story in question. Lower thirds and other graphics may also be altered to reflect the magnitude of the story in a manner that will convey its importance to the viewer.
After the story has been introduced, the anchor will likely ask for a call-in from an audience member who wants to learn more about the subject of the breaking news. This can be a live call-in or, in the case of a local station, a recorded one.
If the story has not yet been fully covered, a station may choose to continue to follow it, or if the situation is serious enough, they may have a reporter at the scene of the breaking event. Depending on the situation, the coverage may be a live shot from the location of the event, or may cut away to images and video.
