Trending is a feature on the website Current News that allows viewers to select which stories they would like to see highlighted and featured. The feature is often used during breaking news events to highlight stories that are being widely viewed. The feature also provides readers with a chance to comment on the stories being selected. In addition to the Trending section, Current News has features such as the Newsflash and Special report. Prior to the introduction of 24-hour news networks, breaking news events required interruptions in non-news programming or regular network newscasts (either with a cut-in, an alert crawl, or a “Special Report” ticker). In more serious cases, station imaging promos were used to interrupt regular programing.
