Current News is a type of news coverage that interrupts or pre-empts regular programming to report a breaking news story. It is often used to cover important political, economic, or military events.

Breaking news on television typically consists of an opening graphic with music, followed by a voiceover by a news anchor introducing the story at hand. Lower thirds and other graphics may also be altered to convey a sense of urgency.

Depending on the event, coverage can last from a few minutes to multiple hours, or even days at a time. Regardless, it usually involves in-studio analysts who are on the ground at the location of the story or who provide analysis via satellite, broadband (B-GAN), phone or other means of communication.

When an interruption is deemed to be important, it is usually broadcast as the first occurrence of a particular type of programming in the network’s schedule (usually the morning or late night newscast). The story may then be pre-empted on sister stations and digital subchannels for their own local broadcast.

For non-national network newscasts, the special report or breaking news may be aired as a full segment or short teaser. The format varies, but in general the most important thing to note is that the news segment should be short and to the point.

The end of the news segment will usually have a graphic with a brief video of what happened during the breaking news story. It will then be followed by a promo encouraging viewers to go to the network’s website for more details about the breaking news story or to follow the station or network on social media platforms.
