A breaking news story is a type of news event that requires an immediate interruption of current programming (or, in the case of network television stations, a regular scheduled newscast). When this occurs, the station will often use a “Newsflash” or “Special report” graphic and a distinctive music cue to notify viewers. Depending on the severity of the story, the cut-in may be as short as a few minutes or may last for hours or days. In the past, this sort of interruption was typically reserved for extremely urgent events such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy, which elicited nationwide coverage requiring many broadcasters to interrupt their regular schedules.
