Current News is a type of broadcast television program that covers breaking news stories. It may last several minutes or extend for hours – or for days at a time, if the event continues to unfold.

Typically, the breaking news coverage begins with an opening graphic that is accompanied by music (such as NBC’s “The Pulse of Events”, composed by John Williams), which emphasizes the importance of the event. An anchor is introduced, and he or she welcomes the viewer to the broadcast.

The broadcast continues in a similar manner to a regular newscast, with the anchor introducing the story at hand. The anchor may also introduce a live shot of the scene, and will then share information about the story as it breaks.

Networks will often pre-empt their normal programming (along with sister stations and digital subchannels) when the breaking news occurs. This is usually done to provide a greater audience for the news story.

Local television stations will often break away from the network feed and air their own local newscasts if there is a high-profile event in progress. This is typically done with the knowledge that a station’s talent will stop the show and reset coverage, at which point an opening graphic may be rolled again to signal the end of local news coverage and a switch to the network’s network feed for the rest of the break.

The broadcast will then return to a regular newscast, and any segments missed will be re-joined in progress or started back up at the point of interruption. This is often done to give viewers a full wrap-up on the network’s evening or morning news program, if applicable.
