Breaking news is a term used to describe a news event of such urgency that it requires the national network newscast to interrupt regular non-news programming (or, in some cases, a previously recorded breaking news segment). In addition to an announcement about the interruption, a countdown graphic may appear and network affiliates will be encouraged to switch to the national feed. This type of news interruption was common at the time of major breaking stories such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy, and is now a staple of 24-hour news networks.
