Current news, also known as breaking news, special reports, or news flash, is a type of television or radio coverage that interrupts programming in order to report the details of a current event. Breaking news is used for both local and national events.
During broadcasts, the news anchor will introduce the breaking story and may either show live video of the events or continue the story on air from a live shoot (usually a camera positioned on the ground or in a car) while it is being reported on. The station may then cut away to a reporter who is at the scene of the event and/or provide more details as they become available.
In the past, this type of breaking news was limited to extremely urgent and dire stories such as the assassination of a political leader or a terrorist attack. However, due to the ubiquity of 24-hour television networks and other media outlets, breaking news has evolved into an important feature of modern broadcast television and radio.
When a breaking news event occurs, the network will usually alert all its affiliate stations via an internal alert service, at which point the station’s feed will switch to a reverse countdown, which will be followed by a graphic and voiceover. In the case of local stations, this will be followed by a break from the network feed in order to start the local evening newscast (or an extended edition, if applicable).
The news anchor will then announce that more information will be provided in the coming hours on the station’s local newscast, as well as on the network’s morning and afternoon programs. If the story is of high enough importance or interest, it will be re-joined in progress if not already on air and will be joined in the same time zone as the original program for the remainder of the story.
