When breaking news occurs, network broadcasters often interrupt current non-news programming and sometimes regular newscasts to report the event. The breaking news is usually accompanied by a distinctive music cue and a graphic. A countdown to the break may be used, so that affiliate stations can switch over to the network feed for the special report. Prior to the advent of 24-hour news networks, interruptions of regular programs for breaking news events were rare, with only urgent news eliciting cut-ins or alert crawls during normal programming. In recent years, some major news channels have begun using “Special Report” tickers for selected breaking stories during regularly scheduled programming, lessening the need for cutting-ins or “Newsflash” or “Special Report” graphics.
