Streaming television has been around for a decade. But its future is uncertain. Unlike cable TV, streaming doesn’t have to be tethered by limited licenses to carry TV news. Streaming has the potential to change the way political news is covered.

Several news networks have entered the streaming market. They’ve taken programming from cable and repurposed it for the streaming audience. This allows them to offer timely news on demand, lowering the cost of building news libraries.

The major news networks have high hopes for the streaming business. They’ve invested hundreds of millions of dollars in streaming operations. Some of these investments have resulted in lucrative profits.

Fox Nation has drawn 1.5 million subscribers to its streaming app. Its success demonstrates that TV audiences will pay for content.

Earlier this year, CBS entered the streaming news business. Its strategy is aggressive. In 2022, the network plans to beam 45,000 hours of local news to its subscribers.

As more viewers turn to online video, news coverage is likely to undergo a serious overhaul. Online video will likely attract a new generation of overtly political news operations. Streaming will also allow viewers to customize their experience.

Streaming also makes video news available everywhere. Unlike radio, which could only report on yesterday’s news, streaming makes it possible to see what’s happening now.

Streaming also has proven to be a successful way to attract niche audiences. Newsy, Cheddar, and Newsmax are among the companies that have planted their flags in the streaming frontier.
