News is fast-paced and it’s easy to get lost in the lingo. Whether you’re an editor or simply interested in how journalism works, this glossary can help you quickly decipher common journalism terms and newspaper acronyms.
A headline that introduces a story, providing the five W’s (who, what, where, when and why) to grab readers’ attention. Often appearing at the top of the page, this is one of the most important parts of an article to help establish its credibility and give context.
An organization that provides news, pictures and videos to publications. Also known as a wire service, news agencies are the engine room of the media world, connecting multiple publications and helping them stay on top of breaking news. Examples include the Associated Press and AFP.
A journalistic technique that involves interviewing members of the public for their insights and experiences on a topic or issue. Typically, these quotes are then incorporated into an article for added authenticity and relevance.
A journalist who specializes in a certain field or niche, typically having deep knowledge and connections that allow them to write more insightful and impactful stories. A beat is also the name of a journalist’s section within a publication, such as politics, sports, crime or business.
