Breaking news is a term used to describe an event of major importance that warrants interruption of the normal broadcast of non-news programming (or, in some cases, a regular newscast). If the story is particularly urgent, a network may provide a countdown sequence so that affiliate stations can switch over to the network feed in time for the breaking news to begin. In addition, the regular station lower third graphics may be altered to indicate that there is breaking news, and an alert crawl or newsflash may be used for some events. This is more common on 24-hour news channels, where an anchor is available for live interruptions.
