Trending is a news feature that highlights stories and videos from the Web that are getting the most attention. The feature is available on the Current News homepage and the app.
Breaking news is an event that warrants the immediate interruption of currently non-news programming, or in the case of a national network, a regularly scheduled newscast. The broadcaster will first alert its affiliated stations to stand by, and then pause the newscast or the network feed with a countdown sequence, allowing affiliates to switch over. This is often followed by an open graphic and distinctive music cue, and then the anchor for the breaking story.
Before 24-hour news networks existed, this type of programming interruption was usually reserved for events requiring nationwide coverage and a need for many stations to interrupt their regular schedules, such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy. In more recent times, however, major networks have begun using “Newsflash” and “Special Report” tickers to cover some breaking stories during their scheduled programming, lessening the need for cut-ins. This trend is most prevalent on cable and satellite channels.
