Trending is a feature on NPR that talks about stories that are currently being covered on the network and in other media. Those stories could be a new lawsuit filed by a man with Tourette syndrome who shouted a racial slur during a BAFTA awards ceremony or the growing concerns over federal immigration enforcement in Maine where agents have told asylum seekers they’re “domestic terrorists” or that their cases are being reviewed for possible deportation. When a story warrants an interruption of current non-news programming, stations will use a countdown sequence or a special graphic to alert affiliates to switch to the network feed and begin reporting on the breaking news. Depending on the severity of the event, lower thirds or other graphics may also be altered to convey urgency.
