Trending is a segment of Current News that talks about topics that are currently generating a lot of interest. These stories can be anything from a popular viral video to the latest celebrity gossip. In some cases, a trending story may even be breaking news, such as an unexpected development related to a major national or international event. When a breaking news story is reported, the network’s regular non-news programming will usually stop and the station’s local news will be overlaid on the screen. Until the advent of 24-hour news channels, this type of interruption was generally reserved for extremely urgent events such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy, which required a nationwide interruption of all television and radio stations to report on the tragedy.
