A breaking news event is an urgent story that requires the immediate interruption of non-news programming (or, in some cases, regularly scheduled newscasts). This type of news coverage is often referred to as either a “Newsflash” or a “Special Report”, although the latter is generally reserved for more serious events that warrant a full newscast. Typically, a broadcaster will alert all of its affiliates to the break with a countdown sequence and the network’s feed is then switched to a live news desk to continue coverage. During a breaking news story, lower thirds and other graphics may be altered to convey urgency. Prior to the development of 24-hour news channels, programming interruptions for breaking news were typically limited to severe weather events and extremely important national stories such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy.
