When an event occurs that warrants breaking news coverage, a television or radio station will interrupt current non-news programming (and in some cases regular network newscasts) and alert viewers to the situation through a special graphic with a distinctive music cue. This is known as a newsflash or special report. Depending on the seriousness of the news event, breaking-news coverage may only last for minutes or could extend hours or even days. Before the advent of 24-hour news networks, such interruptions were typically reserved for events of national significance such as the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. During such breaks, a countdown sequence is usually used to allow station affiliates to switch to the network feed and join the reporting effort.
