Trending is a news and talk program that highlights the biggest stories currently being talked about in the media. Often, breaking news events are reported from around the world. Breaking news usually requires that non-news programming or regularly scheduled network newscasts be interrupted, either live or pre-recorded, and are replaced with a countdown sequence to notify all affiliate stations to switch over to the news feed and start broadcasting the breaking event. News anchors then present a live report on the breaking news. Depending on the event, this may only last a few minutes or could extend for several hours or even days. Alternatively, networks may insert a special ticker during regular programming that provides updates on the event (see Special Report). This has lessened the need for live interruptions of regular programs.
