Breaking News is a feature on television and radio broadcasts that identifies and displays current events or news in a prominent position, typically interrupting regular programming. It is most often used to identify severe weather events, such as hurricanes or tornado warnings. When such an event warrants breaking news coverage, the network’s feed will pause to allow local affiliate stations to switch to it, and a graphic, usually with an associated sound cue, will appear on the screen. In the past, such breaks were restricted to highly urgent news events requiring nationwide coverage, such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy in 1963.
