Breaking news, also known as a Newsflash or Special Report is a segment of television and radio programming in which a national network or local station interrupts regular non-news broadcasting to cover an event of major importance. It is often accompanied by a countdown sequence, and the network feed will be interrupted to allow affiliates to join the breaking news coverage, which may last for only a few minutes or could continue for several hours or days. Typically, the break is accompanied by a distinctively designed graphic and a new music cue; lower thirds and other graphics are often altered to convey the sense of urgency. Breaking news is commonplace at 24-hour news networks, but was less frequent in the pre-television era of North America, where interruptions were reserved for extremely urgent events such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy or natural disasters such as hurricanes or tornadoes.
