Breaking News is a term used to describe a news event that requires the national network feed to be interrupted from non-news programming (or in some cases, from a regular scheduled newscast). A broadcaster will normally alert their affiliates by telling them to stand by, and then will pause the newscast with a countdown sequence. Then, a news anchor will introduce the breaking story and present live coverage from the scene of the story. Often, the report will include analysis of the situation by journalists in the field.

Prior to the advent of 24-hour news networks, such interruptions were typically reserved for extremely urgent events, such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy. Nowadays, news outlets have a special “breaking news” ticker that can be interrupted from within regularly scheduled programs or other events such as severe weather, reducing the need for cut-ins during programming. Other names for this type of broadcast are Newsflash and Special Report.
