A breaking news story is an event that warrants the interruption of non-news or regular newscast programming, or a special live report on a broadcast network. Prior to the rise of 24-hour news networks, this type of breaking news was normally reserved for events that demanded nationwide coverage and required numerous stations to interrupt their programming. These include such occurrences as the assassination of John F. Kennedy, which prompted CBS to interrupt its regular programming for a special report, or a natural disaster that requires extensive and sustained coverage. When such an event occurs, the network will typically announce the break with a special graphic and distinctive music cue. The resulting coverage may last only minutes, or continue for hours, or even days, as events unfold and the story is developed. Occasionally, lower thirds and other graphics are also altered to convey a sense of urgency.
