A breaking news story is an event that warrants an interruption of regular non-news programming on television or radio, usually to provide live coverage. The breaking news is typically a high-level news report presented by the network anchor(s), sometimes accompanied by video from the scene of the story. The breaking news may be followed by a segment with analysis from the network’s on-air and online journalists. In the past, before 24-hour news networks existed, this type of coverage was often limited to severe weather events, such as landfalling hurricanes or tornado warnings. Breaking news reports are often preceded by a countdown sequence, to allow station affiliates to switch to the national network feed. This is also known as a newsflash or special report.
