When an event occurs that is so newsworthy that it requires immediate coverage, networks interrupt non-news programming (or even regular newscasts) to broadcast a “breaking news” segment. This may be accompanied by an alert that is displayed on the bottom of the screen, and the network’s feed will usually pause for any affiliates that want to join in; it is also common for the news anchor to announce the story. In the past, breaking news events such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy would prompt a complete interruption of all scheduled programming, but this is less common nowadays with the advent of 24-hour news channels.
