Breaking news is a term that is used interchangeably with late breaking news and “special report.” The term describes a live story or important story at the moment that is of widespread interest. The term can also refer to a story that was previously reported but has not yet made the front page. This term is often diluted, and is now a redundant reference to all news. Sometimes, the term “breaking news” is replaced with “Just In.”
Breaking news can disrupt prime-time television programming. It is particularly disruptive for highly rated shows and those that have a short amount of time before they air. A recent example is the Shayrat missile strike on ABC in April 2017.
In other recent news, Sri Lanka’s government ordered a two-week shutdown of all government offices and schools. Public transport was also halted, as dollars to pay for fuel were scarce. Due to the severe petrol shortage, the Public Administration ministry ordered skeleton services starting Monday. Another news item from the week was the approval by the US Food and Drug Administration to give two COVID-19 vaccines to children as young as six months.
