A breaking news story is an event that elicits so much coverage that current non-news programming must be interrupted. When this occurs, the network feed will often begin with a countdown sequence to allow its affiliate stations to switch to it. A “Newsflash” or a “Special Report” ticker will then be introduced to the viewer, with distinctive music cues used to signal a break in regular programming. Before the advent of 24-hour news networks, these breaks were typically reserved for very urgent stories, such as the assassination of U.S. President John F. Kennedy in 1963. These events usually required nationwide interruptions of both the network and its affiliated local television and radio stations.
